The Christian Examen: Ending the Day With God

Not every Christian prayer must be long. The Examen offers a simple daily way to review the day with honesty, gratitude, and repentance.

The Christian Examen: Ending the Day With God

The Christian life is not only formed by what we do in church on Sunday. It is also shaped by how we pay attention to God on an ordinary Tuesday night.

One of the Church’s simplest and most enduring practices for this is the Examen.

What Is the Examen?

Often associated with Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Examen is a prayerful review of the day. It is not a harsh self-audit. It is a way of noticing where God was present, where we resisted grace, and where our hearts most need mercy.

A Simple Shape

The Examen often unfolds in five movements:

  1. Give thanks for the day.
  2. Ask for light to see clearly.
  3. Review the day slowly.
  4. Notice where you fell short or where grace appeared.
  5. Entrust tomorrow to God.

This is not about perfectionism. It is about relationship.

Why It Matters

Many Christians want to grow in prayer, but daily life often stays unexamined. Days pass quickly. Reactions pile up. Gratitude gets crowded out by fatigue. The Examen helps re-open the day before God so the heart is not left in spiritual autopilot.

Honest, Not Dramatic

Some evenings the Examen reveals a major wound, sin, or invitation. Other nights it reveals something quiet: a moment of unnecessary impatience, a forgotten blessing, an avoided act of courage.

The power of the practice is not spectacle. It is regular honesty before God.
